How Can I Interpret My Dream?

Question from a Site Viewer
I recently had a dream (I had the dream in 2008, and I had accepted Christ into my heart in 2005) which reminded me of a sin I committed years earlier — the sin of cursing the Holy Spirit. Then I died. I do not know why I had this dream or what it means. I contacted the Billy Graham Association and they assured me I did not commit the unpardonable sin. They advised me to find a wise pastor with whom to discuss my dream. I want to know how I can interpret my dream.

Tim’s Answer
I will tell you my thoughts concerning the dream. Dreams can easily be interpreted by anyone. But most interpretations are simply wrong. In the ancient days the kings would have people who would interpret their dreams for them. But sometimes the kings were wise enough to understand that anyone can come up with an interpretation of a dream. Thus, we find in Daniel 2 that Nebuchadnezzar, when he was disturbed by a dream that had been sent from God and wanted to get the interpretation right, put his dream tellers to a test. They failed. Only God can reveal the true meaning of dreams, as Daniel tells the king.

I sometimes am puzzled by dreams, but I do not let dreams drive my life. God can use dreams to enrich life, but there is no account in Scripture where God has ever used a dream to change what He previously has written. We know that His Word is truth (John 17:17), and there is no shadow of turning with God (James 1:17). Thus, His promise remains that those who believe in Jesus Christ have eternal life (John 3:16; 5:24). When Jesus speaks of the unpardonable sin, He does not annul the promise of John 3:16. He never says that those who come to Him will be saved, except for those who blaspheme the Holy Spirit. He never says that those who follow Him will be saved, except for those who blaspheme the Holy Spirit. Salvation is offered to all who will come. And, if you want to come to Christ, that in itself is evidence that the Spirit of God is working in your life. So, in my reading of Scripture, any dream that says that one who has believed in Jesus for their salvation has also committed the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is from Satan and not from God. And you came to Jesus in 2005, by your own words.

My encouragement to you is not to focus on past sins, but to focus on Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14; Hebrews 12:2). Keep coming to Him. That is what it means to follow Him. Your life will be enriched as you get to know Him and meditate on His great love for you. And when thoughts about potential sins against the Holy Spirit come to your mind, just lay them before God, leave them there, and pursue a life of holiness before God and good works toward men (James 1:27).

My prayer is that you will live out the remainder of your days in this journey as a blessing to God and to people. Read His Word. Meditate on it. Memorize it. Pray to Him. Praise Him. Help others. Seek to be about His mission on this earth. As you seek to follow the commands of Colossians 3, you will find your life filled to over-flowing with the love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and self-control that mark the presence of the Spirit of God in one’s life.

one who also has been forgiven,

  1. Very helpful I myself had a dream about were I was looking at a cd and it read blasphemy sin, then I was buying things that said Satan vs Angel, then I thought should it not say Jesus vs Satan then I questioned what it was I was purchasing. After waking up from dream and prayer and analysis the things I was buying/consuming represented my struggle with Pornography. With this dream I know I must draw closer to Yahweh and turn from my former life.
