I keep backsliding. I want to stop but I can’t seem to do it. Is there a way back to God?

I accepted Jesus as my savior in July 2011. I know I was saved. He has shown me signs and I have heard His voice. But for some months when I first started dating my boyfriend (ex now), I stopped reading my Bible and started doing sexual acts then I would feel a pound of guilt on me at the end.

He sent me signs saying He’s still with me. But I keep backsliding and I just want to go back to where I started which was saved. How do I do that?

Tim’s Answer – There IS a Way Back to God

Thanks for writing. The way back to God is always by confessing and forsaking our sins and drawing near to Him with our hearts. If we draw near to Him He will draw near to us.

And, if you ask how can we draw near to God, I like Philippians 4:4-9. We always rejoice in Him. We practice grace towards those around us. We keep our eyes focused on the coming of Christ. We practice faith in God by choosing not to be anxious, but rather taking everything to God in prayer, with thanksgiving. We do not let bad thoughts have place in our minds, but we think about the things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, etc. And we do the things that we have seen Christ and the apostles do.

The bottom line is that we make it our aim to love God and love our neighbors, and choose to be a servant, both to God and to others.

Another great passage is 2 Peter 1:5-11. The promise attendant to this passage is that we will not be barren or unfruitful and we will not stumble.

Always, when we have gone away, it is difficult to return and feel clean again. But the goal is not the feelings, but our holiness and love. If we draw near to God in our minds, seek Him in our thoughts, meditate on His Word during our days, plead on the behalf of others in our prayers, and practice deeds of kindness in our actions towards others, we will find God drawing near to us.

But, I provide this warning. If you really want to come back to God, He will put you to the test to see if this is really what you want. There is no righteous person whom God does not test (Psalm 11:5). Even Jesus was tested. So, be prepared to pursue God no matter what comes. If you do, you will come out of the testing with the richest blessings of heaven (1 Peter 5:10).

May your desire for Jesus become the consuming passion of your life.
