Must We Believe that Jesus Is God?

A while back (a long while back) a site reader asked Tim about the importance of believing in the deity of Jesus. As usual, Tim didn’t mince words in his response. Jesus made a strong statement when He said, “. . . for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” Jesus claimed to be God and told his disciples that they better believe it or they would die in their sins. Hello Pilgrim
I thank you for your reply to this question, as i have relatives that are part of a group of people that are so called witnesses for God. Your answer clearly defines the sad error to all those that do not believe that Jesus is God incarnate, which only the Holy Spirit can reveal.

Or perhaps he told them, “If you do not believe that I am he [the Messiah], you will die in your sins”. Only about 20 verses later, he said to the same group, “I am a man who has told you what I heard from God”. Do you really think God would say that? What would the hearers of that believe?
