This is an interesting study, because after the Spirit of God came on Saul and after he was given a different heart and was a different person, he still disobeyed God in significant ways. Disobedience was bound up in Saul and not even the Spirit’s presence was enough encouragement to lead him to obey. God makes it very clear; God’s rejection of Saul was because Saul had rejected the word of the LORD (1 Samuel 15:23). The Spirit of God will not dwell in a disobedient heart.
King Saul consulted a medium and it worked! Therefore, we should be able to consult mediums, too, right?
Back in the Old Testament we see that King Saul consulted a medium. Samuel appeared to them and spoke to Saul. Was this a normal occurrence for the Israelites? Their king consulted a medium and it worked. Should this be a model for us? Is it OK for a Christian to be consulting mediums? Based on the result of Saul’s meeting with the medium (1 Samuel 28:19), we don’t think it’s a good idea (notwithstanding all the other Scripture references directing God’s people to avoid consulting mediums—Leviticus 19:31; 20:6; Deuteronomy 18:9-14; 2 Kings 21:6; 23:24-25; 2 Chronicles 33:6; Isaiah 8:19).
